No Foundations, No Edifice:

نویسنده

  • Geoffrey Garrett
چکیده

This essay is a response to the article published in International Organization (2001) by George Tsebelis and Geoffrey Garrett. The article grossly misrepresented the state of current theoretical and empirical work on European integration, including some of our own arguments. Believing that such distortions damage scholarly discourse, we requested that IO publish a response detailing, and correcting, the errors. The editors of the journal declined to do so, allowing the misrepresentations to stand. In this paper we identify the most egregious distortions in the Tsebelis and Garrett piece, compare them to what we actually wrote, remark on potential areas of agreement, and discuss areas of genuine debate.

Why Do We Need Foundations for Modelling Uncertainties?

1 What Are Foundations? Surely we want solid foundations. What kind of castle can we build on sand? What is the point of devoting effort to balconies and minarets, if the foundation may be so weak as to allow the structure to collapse of its own weight? We want our foundations set on bedrock, designed to last for generations. Who would want an architect who cannot certify the soundness of the f...
